Smokey eyes are my favourite makeup look of all to create, there are so many varieties and characteristics you really can be as adventurous as you wish. To some the smokey eye can be a daunting task, the thought of using a black eyeshadow may be a little too much and if not careful you may come out looking like you have had a fist fight with your eyeshadow palette rather than looking like a sultry goddess. Smokey eyes are not as difficult as you may think so here are my top 10 tips to help you on your way to smokey eye success!

1. Eyes first - Start with the eyes first, using darker eyeshadows or pigments can create fall out and become a little messy. Creating your smokey eye first, you can easily clean away any fall out without spoiling your face makeup.

2. Use an eyeshadow base - Always try to use an eyeshadow base before hand, this will help keep all the different shades of eyeshadow in place, prevent creasing and help with the longevity of your makeup look. Eyeshadow primers will also help bring out the pigmentation of your eyeshadows making them more vibrant.

3. Spend time on your brows - Eyebrows frame your face and most importantly your eyes, if you are creating a strong eye look using darker eyeshadows, the brows can sometimes become lost in the background. You may find you need to fill them in a little darker than usual to bring them out and enhance the structure of your makeup look.

4. Pick your colour theme - A smokey eye does not have to be black or brown! Experiment with purples, greens and blues, which ever makes you feel most comfortable and confident.

5. Use a range of shades - One main tip to creating the perfect smokey eye is using a variation of shades, light to dark. You may have heard the term "transition shade" countless times watching YouTube tutorials, transition shades help blend different colours together to achieve a seamless non-blotchy finish. I find the more eyeshadows you use the more smokey the eye look will become, if you are creating a brown smokey eye don't just use a light and a dark brown, try three or four different brown shades from dark to light to create a more smokey effect.

6. Blend Blend Blend! - Blending it the most important tip for your perfect smokey eyes, you want each shade to transition into the next without being able to see any visible lines from where one meets the next. The more you put into blending the more smokey and seamless your eye look will become. Blending also takes longer than you may think so if you look in the mirror and think "have I blended this enough?" probably not... blend until you can't blend no more!

7. Tight-line the top AND lower water line - One step I think gets missed out of a smokey eye routine is lining the lower and especially the top water line. These create such a huge difference and enhance your eye look with minimal effort. By tight-lining with a dark pencil adds more depth and definition to your eyes, it keeps the area around your lash line dark which looks more sultry making your eyes pop.

8. Add a little at a time - Don't throw on masses of the darkest shade and wonder why you look like you have been in a fist fight, build up your shadows by adding a little bit, blending then adding more until you have the pigmentation you want.

9. Blend out further - Especially under the eyes, blending out a little further than you usually would will create more of a smokey effect.

10. Keep the rest of your makeup look minimal - You have just spend hours perfecting your smokey eye, of course you want this to be the main focus of your makeup look! Keep the rest of your look toned down with a flawless base and a complementing nude lip.

Now you are ready to tackle that eyeshadow palette and create the perfect smokey eye! I hope these tips helped you out, please let me know by Twitter and Instagram and don't forget to share your smokey eye selfies with me!!

    1. Aw so happy I helped! You will have to tag me in a pic so I can see. For blending I like the Sigma E24 as it is fluffy, any that are similar to that will be good x
