The highlighter has fast become one of the most popular makeup products in our makeup bags, one question which came to me whilst brainstorming for this post was, how did I used to do my makeup before highlighter was invented? What did it look like? From creating a subtle healthy glow to hard core strobing we all include this step in our makeup routines and I don't think highlighting is going anywhere fast.
If I had to pick one makeup product I could never be without it would be my highlighter, there is not a day I wear makeup which I won't apply my highlight and I have a pretty nice collection. From cream to liquid to powder highlighters I have them all and I love to swap and change between them constantly. Powder highlighters are probably my favourite of them all, I like to wear them on their own or even paired with a liquid or cream and they all add the prettiest final touches to our makeup looks.
Bottom to top: MAC Soft and Gentle, Becca Champagne Pop, ABH So Hollywood
Being the first highlighter I ever brought MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is a cult highlighter, I bet most of you will have owned this at some point. The marble effect of champagnes and pinks makes this give the most beautiful glow. Soft and Gentle I think is most suited to lighter skin tones due to being more pinkish and slightly cooler, looking stunning on the fairest of skins. Having campagne tones running through it also makes this pretty with a slight tan, being fair skinned this is perfect all year round highlight for me as I can still rock this in summer time! If you are looking for a subtle highlight for everyday makeup soft and gentle is perfect, just a light sweep keeps this highlight very sheer for a natural "glowing from within" effect, you can then build up the intensity for more night time looks.
My absolute ride or die highlighter has to be BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop! If you don't own this already, where have you been? This is one highlighter which looks stunning on any skin tone, not being too warm or cool anyone from the fairest to the darkest skin tones can wear this. Champagne Pop has a beautiful peachy gold undertone and is so insanely pigmented a light hand is a must when applying it, this can become pretty intense very quickly! I absolutely love the texture, it is so creamy it blends so easily over the skin leaving a radiant glow with no glitter or shimmer particles in sight!
My go to summer highlighter is Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator in So Hollywood (could not find it, other shades here). Suited to more tanned to darker skin tones this highlighter is like powdered gold, I love to wear this when I have fake tanned and especially when I am wearing warm makeup looks, the gold really complements the warm colours in my eye makeup. I would say out of all three this is definitely the most intense I think because it is so golden, again the texture is beautiful, blendable and super pigmented. My go to makeup look for this highlight is a warm smokey eye, heavy on the bronzer and So Hollywood for a sun kissed glow.
